Will - 1795 (Andreas)

In the Name of God Amen I Elinor Mylrea alias Gell widow and relect of the Rev. Wm. Mylrea in Archdeacon of this Isle being in good health and of sound mind memory & understanding but considering the uncertainty of the life do make my last Will & Testament in manner following:

First I commit my Soul to Almighty God and my Body to be decently buried at the direction of my Executor hereinafter mentioned

Also I leave and bequeath unto my son Thos. Mylrea all and singular that house situate in [Belltown] wherein John Crain lives with all Easements and Appurtenances to the same belonging together with the Sum of five pounds.

Also I leave and bequeath unto my son Basil Mylrea the sum of Five Pounds

Also I leave and bequeath unto my Daughter Lucy Quayle alias Mylrea the Sum of Five Pounds

Also I leave and bequeath unto my Grand daughter Cath. Quayle daughter of Robt. Quayle the sum of Five pounds when she attains to age And whereas the fortune of the said Cath. Quayle be by her mother's Will falls unto her in case the said Cath. dies before her attainment to age & is [therefore] upon that contingency leave and bequeath [one Hundred] pounds of the said fortune to my son Thos. Mylrea - One hundred pounds to my son Basil Mylrea - and one hundred pounds to my said daughter Lucy Quayle alias Mylrea

Lastly I leave and bequeath unto my son Dan'l Mylrea clerk the whole residue and the remains of all my Goods, Chattels and Effects and nominate and Appoint my said son Dan'l Mylrea Clerk Executor of this my Last Will & Testament in Witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 9th day of July 1794

Signed and duly published and Declared by the s'd Ellinor Mylrea as and for her Last Will & Testament in presence of Isabella [Graham] John Casar Gellng Jurati

At a Consistory Court holden at KK Michael the 20th day of Febr'y 1796 Notwithstanding that this Will has been proven but by one Witness only yet as no objection has been offered thereto The Execor is sworn in Court in form of Law and hath given pledges For the payment of Debts and Legacies namely Wm. John Gelling Atty. At Law [of Ballaugh] & also Thos. Gawn Atty. At law of the town of Douglas

Probatum est Wm. Clucas

Febr'y 24th 1797 Thos. Mylrea enters a claim a'gst the Estate Daniel Mylrea for the sum of £88.1.3 Btsh & craves the law

 

NOTES

  1. Wife of Rev. William Mylrea, Archdeacon of Mann
  2. Her husband was the youngest surviving son of Daniel Mylrea jnr & Lucy Parry
  3. Despite the fact that WIlliam was the third son, and had surrendered whatever claim he might have had to his father's estate in 1757, he left a substantial legacy of houses and lands. See also their cottages in Peel of which they had several in 1786.
  4. Ellinor Gell was an heiress
  5. She & William were married in Peel, 29th January 1755, twelve children of whom seven survived to adulthood:
    • Lucy b1756 married John Quayle 1873
    • Daniel b1757 married Susannah Curghey 1788, two sons and two daughters (all died without issue)
    • Thomas b1758, unmarried, died 1830
    • William b1760, slaver?, unmarried, died 1787
    • Catherine b1768 married Robert Quayle 1791 and died the following year
    • James b1770, slaver?, unmarried, died 1794
    • Basil b1771, slaver?, unmarried, died 1799
  6. Son Daniel followed in his father's footsteps and became the Archdeacon of Mann
  7. Son Thomas followed another family career path and became an MHK. His mother left him the house in Billtown
  8. The three youngest sons all died and sea, and were probably slavers
  9. Youngest son Basil might have been a tearaway. He borrowed heavily but it was his family who repaid the debts
  10. Two daughters married brothers Quayle
  11. Ellinor was buried 9th February, 1795 in Andreas
